How to choose a water tank? The main characteristics of water tanks

The collection of rainwater or waste water, for treatment, purification or reuse, is an ecological and intelligent way of managing the water supply, and ensuring companies and private individuals a safe water reserve, and in some cases also drinkable.

On the market, as in the Di Camillo catalogue, there are many different tank models available, with specific characteristics to satisfy all the needs of industrial or domestic customers.

Indoor, outdoor or underground use

One of the first considerations to make when choosing the characteristics of the tank concerns the place of its installation. Tanks for water (but not only, also those for diesel, fuel or other liquids) have different characteristics depending on whether they are designed for internal, external or underground use.

Outdoor water tanks, for example, must be designed in robust materials that are resistant to impacts, bad weather and atmospheric agents. One of the most used is polyethylene, which makes tanks light, especially those that need to be moved frequently, and at the same time resistant. In many cases, in fact, polyethylene allows the creation of ribs and a rough surface which make the tank more reliable and less subject to failure and micro-cracks. It is also possible to add additives and anti-UV agents to the polyethylene, which prevent the proliferation of algae, bacteria and microorganisms

Among the outdoor tanks, underground tanks are distinguished. These are made with special ribs that make them suitable for heavy-duty uses, and are made of non-toxic materials for drinking purposes. Furthermore, some underground tanks, such as the Di Camillo 3000 liter underground polyethylene tank, could be made with a special technique, that of rotational molding with constant thickness, which gives them greater resistance. The tanks made in this way are in fact defined as “high density” and are self-supporting and without joints, so as to be more solid and durable over time.

Water tank capacity

A second aspect to take into consideration when choosing the right tank concerns capacity. This is strictly related to the available spaces, but also to the intended use of the tank.

For small agricultural uses or for a home garden, to collect rainwater to use in washing the car or driveway, but also in the industrial sector, to power agricultural machinery, refrigeration systems or cooling systems, a tank may be sufficient with a capacity of 1000 litres. For large-scale agricultural uses, livestock farms, industrial contexts in which the need for water is greater, as well as for fire-fighting reserves, a tank of around 5000 liters may be necessary.

Horizontal or vertical development

In the case of internal tanks, the development must not preclude the passage of the tanks through the doors: for this reason there are tanks with specific shapes to adapt to the most disparate conformations of the spaces. Such as the understairs stainless steel water tanks or the Di Camillo parallelepiped polyethylene water tanks, designed and manufactured for installation in narrow and narrow internal spaces such as understairs, attics and ramps.

But even in the case of external tanks, development is important, because it influences the ease of movement. The higher its height (therefore the vertical development) the more difficult it will be to move it without it becoming unbalanced. Horizontal tanks are therefore perfect for becoming large fixed water tanks (especially since most underground tanks have these characteristics). Some Di Camillo tanks also include support and anti-roll feet, to guarantee the tightness of the tanks even on terrain that is not perfectly flat, so as to allow them to be installed in any soil condition.
